Passing the Pokemon torch

Last week- a visit from my sister and her two little ones. Turns out ten years later and Pokemon is still going strong. D and M are collecting cards now just like Griffin and Riley were at their age- back in the 90's! "Gotta catch 'em all- Pokemon!" I still think that's a great gimmick. I remember buying cards and figures, watching the TV show, going to the Pokemon movies, going to Burger King for the happy meal toys(and I remember the happy meal toy recall). We had serious Pokemon love going on for years and years. It was a HUGE part of their childhood- they could dress from head to toe in their Pokemon themed clothing, fell asleep on Pokemon sheets snuggling with their giant fleece pickachu, G and R were Pokemon characters for Halloween (for more than one year even).
So when their cousins came over for a visit last week it was just a little bittersweet for me to watch my big guys hand over (almost all) of their Pokemon cards and all of their videos to the next Pokemon generation.

Very timely

Interesting article- from Fox News of all places! I found this on one of my many homeschooling e-mail groups. It's about the educational value of playing online computer games that even mentions unschooling! This article is about the World of Warcraft game and Griffin and Riley play Runescape but it's still the same concept. I have noticed how their typing skills have improved greatly- Riley's fingers are a blur! And a couple months ago I was reading a long post Griffin was sending to an online friend debating the merits of waffles vs. pancakes. This from a boy who claims he hates to write. And I was going to have a little talk with them today about how they are spending too much time on the computer - maybe they should be spending more time on it!

Beach pics- two weeks ago

I guess it's been a while since I last posted- it sure doesn't seem like two weeks has gone by! I have no excuses- but I am having trouble loading my pics on the computer and that does cause me to put off blogging. My camera broke but Tim just got a new one- these pics are from his camera- I can use it when he's not away on a business trip.
We've not been too busy- we did go to a couple homeschooling park days, a few field trips, a beach day. Last weekend was spent at the local Renaissance Fair where Tim, Griffin and Riley did archery demos both days. I'll be posting pics from that soon. We went to visit John at his place, brought him a ton of food and had dinner with him. I've been to FOUR rummage sales. It's that time again- rummage sale season!

In the interest of truthful blogging.....

People who know me irl know that I'm forever going on about how very photogenic I am. Mostly this is very true. However I have discovered the one place where I just can't seem to take a decent picture- atop a mechanical bull at a country western bar. I went last Sunday night to The Colorado Cafe with my friends Pam and Rachel. We took line dancing lessons, drooled over cowboys (this was mostly Pam), rode the bull and sang a God-awful karaoke rendition of Paradise by the Dashboard light (so sorry Meatloaf, really I'm a fan and it was an homage).
